It is with great sadness that we must announce that YO! SISSY 2017 was our last edition of the festival. We also say this with great pride because for the last 3 years we have been able to give platform to and financially support over 200 queer performers. These artists hailed from 20 different counties and more than half of them call Berlin home. More than 65% of our lineups were comprised of female or trans* identified artists. Y!S artists were featured in major publications like Dazed and Confused, i-D, The Guardian, The Fader, Berliner Zeitung, and many more. Additionally, we took Berlin-based artists on tour to London, Vienna, Hamburg, showcases at Melt Festival, and all across Australia. We did all of this without major corporate sponsorship and very affordable ticket prices to make YO! SISSY accessible to all socio-economic levels…much to the detriment of our own personal bank accounts.
Despite the financial hurdles, we believe that YO! SISSY was a raving success. For the last 3 years, we were able to turn one weekend in July into a technicolored queer paradise. We are forever grateful to our gorgeous staff who tirelessly worked alongside us and shared our passion, to our amazing team of volunteers who donated their skills and their love, to the Berlin Musicboard for believing in our crazy idea, to all the venues who hosted us over the years, to our amazing artists for inspiring and bringing so much joy, and to you, our audience, for dancing with us for the last 3 years. We only ask one thing of you: when you see an event supporting your people, buy a ticket when you can and support them back. Ask for guest list only when you have contributed to the production in some way. If you can’t afford it, ask to help and you will get in for free. We promise you extra hands are always needed and graciously accepted no matter how intimidating or put together the event may seem. Queer economy disappears when we don’t support each other and support larger entities instead.
This is not the end, only the beginning of new projects. We are full of love, full of experience, and full of gratitude that will live on inside us forever. Thank you, YO! SISSY! WE SEE YOU! #dance2gether
